Moog, a company that develops pitch systems for wind turbines, has opened a training facility to help customers to self-manage turbine deployment and speed repair and maintenance work.

The 1,300 m² facility will provide technical training programs to Moog’s global wind energy customers. A dedicated team of expert trainers will deliver customer training programs ranging from a basic introduction to more advanced and focused engineering courses on products and systems. There will be training to suit students of all backgrounds and technical abilities. There will be hands-on technical training in wind turbine pitch systems, pitch motors, pitch servo drives, backup-systems and programmable logic controllers.  The training will include maintenance, performance analysis, repair and retrofits.

The training center will house interactive displays of complete pitch systems and a variety of products to facilitate hands-on practical instruction for participants. This will not be theory only! In addition to standard courses, specialized training courses tailored to specific customer needs will be developed, allowing trainees and their sponsors to define and design their own training package. To ensure high quality and focused instruction course sizes will be limited to small tutor groups so as to provide more opportunity for participants to interact with the trainers. Courses will be offered in both English and German as a standard, and are available in other languages on demand.

“Qualified service engineers with the right technical know-how are essential to the optimum operation of a wind turbine.  Moog’s new training facility will help customers to self-manage turbine deployment and speed up repair and maintenance work. Having qualified technicians especially in hard-to-reach areas and conditions that are difficult to work under are essential to saving customers time and ultimately cost,” said Jens Ograbek, Head of Services and Repair, Moog in Unna, Germany.

Moog says that it has over 25,000 performance systems and products installed both onshore and offshore wind turbines in many countries all over the world. Maximising the operation of these turbines requires specific technical expertise. The idea is that the Wind Training Centre will roll out highly qualified technicians and engineers with the right know-how to commission, troubleshoot and repair the systems.

The Wind Training Centre’s opening ceremony included a number of Moog’s global senior executives as well as guest VIPs.  Mr. Udo Paschedag, State Secretary, Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (above) delivered a speech on the importance of wind energy in the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany.
