Strong wind energy potential can be found with large areas of open land much across the US. These open land areas are rated windy enough for efficient power generation and a shallow continental shelf along the Atlantic shoreline.

Up to 2007, the largest sales were accounted for the West South Central sub-region with 33 percent of total sales, which is mostly driven by the high level of installed wind energy capacity in Texas and Oklahoma.

Subregions with less established wind energy, however, are expected to post stronger market gains through to 2012.
