Top 50 Green Companies Of The World

Intel, PepsiCo & Kohl’s Top EPA’s List of Green Power Buyers

The latest list of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) top green energy buyers show that Intel and PepsiCo maintain their top two spots.

The EPA maintains a list of the top 50 companies which are participating in its Green Power Partnership program. This program is based on how much green energy the participants buy. Included in the data is what percentage of their total electricity purchase is green energy and what types of power they purchase.

Intel Corporation keeps its number one spot with purchases of more than 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power per year according to their energy certificates which is generated from wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass sources

Intel Corporation is a world leader in silicon manufacturing and Intel’s green energy purchase has the equivalent environmental impact of taking more than 185,000 cars off US roads each year. Equally, this would also amount to avoiding the amount of electricity needed to power more than 130,000 average American households annually.

PepsiCo is a close second with 1.144 billion kWh of green power per year from various sources.

PepsiCo is one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies with 2006 annual revenues of more than $35 billion. The company’s Sustainability Vision states: “PepsiCo’s responsibility is to continually improve all aspects of the world in which we operate — environment, social, economic — creating a better tomorrow than today.” PepsiCo purchases renewable energy certificates to match 100 percent of its electricity purchased in the United States, totalling more than 1 billion kilowatt-hours annually..
Kohl’s moved to the number three spot by more than doubling its green power purchase to 600 billion kWh from biogas, biomass, small hydro, solar and wind.

Kohl’s is a family-focused, value-oriented specialty department store offering moderately priced, exclusive and national brand apparel, shoes, accessories, beauty and home products. Kohl’s is a member of EPA’s Green Power Partnership since July 2006 and has a long-term commitment to energy conservation and green power. The company received a 2007 Green Power Leadership Award and currently purchases or generates power from green sources equal to 20 percent of its annual electricity usage.
Other top 10 green power buyers are Dell, Whole Foods Market, Pepsi Bottling Group, Johnson & Johnson, U.S. Air Force, Cisco Systems and the city of Houston.

All top 50 companies combined are buying more than 11 billion kWh of green power annually.

These green power purchasers help to reduce the environmental impacts of electricity and the purchase amounts showing in the list below reflect U.S. operations only and are sourced from U.S.-based green power resources.

The purchase figures are based on annualized Partner contract amounts (kilowatt-hours) and not calendar year totals. The rankings below are based on data received as of 7th April 2009 and are updated on a quarterly basis
