Movers and Shakers in Wind Power: Karen Conover

Categories: Commercial Wind Power

Karen Conover has been guiding the wind industry for more than 25 years. A long time consultant and industry leader, she is one of the few women visible on the national and international wind stage during the surge in development in recent years. Karen’s interest in the renewable energy business began at an early age . At an energy fair in NewJersey, United States, her hometown, she was captivated by the solar and wind-energy displays. From that time forward, she pursued an involvement ... Read More

Radar & Wind Turbines

Categories: Commercial Wind Power

The development and installation of wind farms, particularly in the United States, has not progressed as quickly as it might have due to concerns about the effect of wind turbines on radar. Spinning wind turbine blades create a “cone of silence” above the turbines, making it difficult for 2-D radar systems to see aircraft as they fly overhead. It can also create false positives on radar that can look like weather systems (see photo above). According to the Idaho National Laboratory speaking, close ... Read More

The Winds In Britain – Here To Stay

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Power News

By Colin Houghton The British are, of course, obsessed about the weather. They talk about it incessantly, and despite the fact that 80% of the time it’s just cold, dull and grey, they are always complaining it’s too hot, too wet, freezing, or trying to predict weather it’ll “turn out nice”  for the Bank Holiday weekend (it never does). Usually Britain has warm, wet and windy winters, thanks to Caribbean air carried here by the Atlantic jet stream, a fast-flowing current of air. However ... Read More

Jet Stream Wind Industry – To Catch The Big Wind

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Science

By Colin Houghton Scientists are eyeing the jet stream, an energy source that rages night and day, 365 days a year, just a few miles above our heads. If they can tap into its fierce winds, the world's entire electrical needs could be met, they say. They believe that the total global energy contained in wind is 100 times the power used by everyone on the planet. If we could tap into just one per cent of that energy, they say it still wouldn’t ... Read More

Focus on Maine, New England, United States

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Power News

By Colin Houghton With four grid-scale wind projects already built in the US State of Maine, including the one in Mars Hill (photo left), and two more under construction, Maine is poised to surpass an important milestone as it moves toward its 2015 wind-power generation goal. A cluster of wind turbines has been operating on the north side of Mars Hill Mountain in Mars Hill since 2006. Power produced from all of the projects, was completed, along with an approved portion of another planned Oakfield ... Read More

UK Urges Ireland, The Windiest EU Country, To Build Wind Farms On Its West Coast

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Power News

At the end of spring there was a high-level diplomatic meeting held in London between the UK deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, and senior members of the British-Irish Council. The purpose was to discuss a plan to expand electricity grid connections throughout the British Isles. The core of the plan is to facilitate new connections to link the grids of Ireland and Britain so that Irish wind farms can supply power to England, and other nations. Innovative Wind Turbine Designs: The LoopWing Turbine.

Categories: Product Reviews, Renewable Energy

This Japanese design, the LoopWing wind turbine, was unveiled at the 2006 Japanese Eco-Products Exhibition. At that time, it was said that the turbine was aimed at homeowners, and featured a unique wing design that operated with low vibration and as wind speeds as low as 1.6 m/sec. Efficiency specifications were less detailed. It is claimed that the turbine rotates at wind speeds as low as 2m/s while achieving over 40% co-efficiency at around 8m/s in wind tunnel experiments. A year later LoopWing ... Read More

Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, Middle East

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Renewable Energy, Wind Power News

By Colin Houghton While the Middle East may seem an unlikely place for renewable energy power, given its abundance of fossil fuels, Sir Bani Yas Island, on the western coast of Abu Dhabi, is the site of the Middle East’s largest wind turbine. It has been producing renewable energy since January 2008 The wind turbine, which stands 65 metres high and has three rotor blades each with a 52 metre wing span, has a production capacity of 850 KW per hour. Alternative Energy : Achievable Utopia or Fantasyland?

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Power News

By Colin Houghton In a recent article by Mark Delucchi and Stanford Engineering Professor Mark Jacobson argued that we don’t need nuclear power, coal, or biofuels. Both argue that we can get 100 percent of our energy from wind, water, and solar (WWS) power, efficiently, reliably, safely, sustainably, and economically. We can get to this WWS world by simply building a lot of new systems for the production, transmission, and use of energy. One scenario developed takes us to 2030, when we could have… ... Read More

Innovative Wind Turbine Designs Part II

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Science

Continuing our look at non-conventional wind turbines, here is another interesting design. The idea behind this wind turbine was to home in on simplicity: Produce an off-shore turbine that has the bare necessities to operate, and removing all components that do contribute directly to power generation. This obviously has a welcoming effect on cost to produce. As you can see from the illustration above, the turbine has a number of small rotors with a universal joint that enables it to tilt. That means it ... Read More

Germany Could Become World Leader In Installed Offshore Wind Capacity By 2015

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Power News

By Colin Houghton Germany now has over three-quarters of all offshore wind farm related cable orders. As part of a detailed investigation into power cable installation in the offshore wind industry, technology and consultancy company Enventi claim its analysis shows current UK Government policy is stalling offshore wind development. Their analysis into power-cable installation in the offshore wind industry shows that out of 2,400 kilometres of offshore cables currently on order, only 13% — or 300km — relate to planned UK offshore developments. Canadian Sierra Club Refutes Claims That Wind Turbines Cause Ill-Health

Categories: Commercial Wind Power, Wind Power News

By Colin Houghton During a presentation to the Bruce County Council, in Ontario, Canada, on 1 September, the head of the Sierra Club of Canada said that there's plenty of research worldwide to show that a link between well placed wind turbines and health concerns is unfounded. The executive director of Sierra Club Canada, John Bennett, said "Concerns about the health effects of wind turbines have been grossly exaggerated by those who have other agendas involved".  The address followed a motion passed last ... The Green Dilemma: Bird casualties from wind turbines

Categories: Renewable Energy

How green are you? You may just want to reduce the carbon emissions through solar and wind power, recycling, and not having bonfires in your yard. Or you may be green through to the core and embrace the full panoply of green environmental issues, including the protection/preservation of birds. What happens when green issues conflict? While the unsightliness and noise of wind turbines may rest in the “nuisance to be tolerated for the greater good” box, where turbine blades have caused bird deaths, ... Read More

[ad] By Colin Houghton Since 2003, the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho village, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, has shared the area with 77 large wind turbines. The Mayor of Rokkasho said that the village is an ideal site for harnessing electricity from wind power because the winds blow there almost all through the year. A local resident, 75 years old said the wind turbines were "better than the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant that has caused radiation fears." This comment is hardly surprising since the Fukushima ... The Bill should be enacted in the next few weeks. Unsurprisingly, the Fukushima nuclear disaster boosted the prospects for the bill becoming law astronomically. There was little hope for its success before the accident. [ad] In essence the law will require that Japanese Utilities must purchase ... Read More
